How are bed pillows measured?

When bed pillows are produced, they are "on the flat", which means the dimensions you see listed are BEFORE they are stuffed. Once stuffed, the sides of any stuffed item will effectively pull in, making the item appear smaller from the side or top view.

For example, a pillow shell stuffed with little fill will appear larger than one stuffed extra full. Because of this high post-stuffed variability, industry standards for pillows are only accessible through flat perimeter measurements. This is also the situation with standard/full, queen, and king pillows, which we have operated with for years.

When ordering items online from the numbers, we typically have no clue that this is occurring. We may take a ruler to find out the dimensions of a flat size.

But we can certainly help you with our cushions! A good rule of thumb for cushions is to take the specified flat measurement and visually reduce it by about the following values for a closer 3-D/upper view:

  • Child (16x22).....2.5-5 cm
  • Youth (18x24)..... 4-6 cm
  • Travel (10x24).....2.5-5 cm
